How do I know my face shape?
Looking in a mirror and tracing your outline is how most guides tell you to do it, and it is why two people can argue about the same face. This detector measures instead. It finds 478 landmarks on your face and takes four distances: face length from the upper forehead to the chin, and the width of your forehead, cheekbones and jaw.
Each distance is divided by your cheekbone width, which gives three ratios that do not depend on how big your face is in the photo. Those ratios are compared with six shape profiles, and you get the nearest one. When a second shape is almost as close, you see that too.
What are the six face shapes?
Oval
A little longer than it is wide, with no single width standing out. Forehead, cheekbones and jaw sit in balanced proportion.
Common styling advice: Most haircuts and frame shapes work. Keep the face visible rather than covering it.
Oblong
Clearly longer than it is wide, with the jaw close to the cheekbones in width.
Common styling advice: Volume at the sides and a fringe shorten the face. Deeper frames help too.
Round
Length and width close together, with no strong difference between forehead and jaw.
Common styling advice: Height on top and angular frames add length and definition.
Square
Jaw nearly as wide as the cheekbones, on a face that is on the shorter side.
Common styling advice: Soft layers and round or oval frames balance a wide jaw.
Heart
Forehead clearly wider than the jaw, so the face narrows toward the chin.
Common styling advice: Chin-length cuts and frames heavier at the bottom add width lower down.
Diamond
Cheekbones clearly the widest point, with a narrower forehead and a narrower jaw.
Common styling advice: A fringe and fuller styles at the jaw soften the cheekbones. Oval frames work well.
Why does my face shape change between photos?
The measurements themselves are stable. We ran the same face through two different photos and the face length ratio came out at 1.298 and 1.310, a difference of about 1%. Both returned Square. But a face that sits near the line between two shapes can tip either way on a difference that small, which is why the result says "close to" when it is near a boundary.
Three things move the numbers more. A selfie taken close to the lens distorts proportions, enlarging whatever is nearest the camera. A turned head narrows one side, so we do not score face shape at all when your head is turned. And a big smile changes the width of the lower face. Tilting your head sideways is fine: distances do not change when a photo is rotated.
Your hairline does not enter the calculation, so a fringe or a receding hairline will not change the result. For the most reliable answer, face the camera straight on from arm's length or further, with a neutral expression.

Does face shape change with age?
Gradually, yes. Fat in the cheeks thins and shifts, skin loosens along the jaw, and weight changes alter how full the face is. A face can measure rounder or longer over the years, while the bone structure underneath changes far less.
Can I change my face shape naturally?
Not the bones. Body fat changes how full your face looks, and hairstyle, beard and glasses change how your shape reads to other people. That is why styling advice is organised by face shape.
Why does my result say I am close to two shapes?
Many faces sit between two profiles. When the second nearest shape is almost as close as the first, we show both rather than pretend the call is clear.
Why was my face shape not scored?
Your head was turned too far from the camera. Turning narrows one side of the face and changes every width we measure, so we do not guess. Face the camera straight on and try again. Tilting your head sideways is fine.
